Get 25 practice questions in learning mode right here! All our practice tests are based on the North Carolina Driver Handbook and DMV exam questions. With instant feedback, you’ll know if you’ve learned the contents of the handbook or not.
Always start by getting the latest version of the Driver Handbook. Get it from your nearest DMV office or download from ncdot.gov.
Use the handbook to learn all the facts for your driver examination. It can also be used by licensed drivers, like a parent, to reinforce safe and defensive driving techniques. Many driving rules change with time.
Use practice tests to verify your new knowledge and to check your progress.
Even if the passing score in North Carolina is just 80 percent, you should aim higher on the practice tests.
Set aside one or two months for exam preparations. Two months allow you to space out your study sessions and let you study consistently without burning yourself out.
Driver’s Prep has more than 1,000 North Carolina practice questions waiting for you. They cover all aspects of the handbook.

Who Must Pass the North Carolina DMV Written Test?
- For an original NC learner’s permit or driver license of any type, you need to pass the written knowledge test.
- New North Carolina residents who are replacing an out-of-state or out-of-country license to a North Carolina driver’s license must also complete the written knowledge exam.
- Passing the knowledge test is also required for anyone who lets the driver’s license expire for more than one year.
The Official Written Test
The NC DMV written test has two parts. On the road signs recognition test you must identify the signs by color and shape and explain what each sign means.
The second part covers North Carolina traffic laws and safe driving.
How Many Questions are on the NC DMV Test?
DMV will ask you to identify 12 different warning signs and regulatory signs. You can only miss 3 of these road signs questions.
The knowledge test has 25 questions. To pass, you must successfully answer 20 of the 25 questions, which means a passing score of 80%.
The written knowledge test is available in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Spanish. Manuals in these languages are also available from your local DMV office.
If you have difficulty reading, you can take an audio or oral test. Make sure you contact your local DMV office before your visit.
